Description

This tote bag is made of a used Japanese rice bag.

The creator of this bag is Masako Kubo, from Kochi in Japan. Her parents in law run a farm and she always returned the rice bag when she received rice from them, as she thought they will use it again.
However, the empty rice bag was not used again, and once she found out, she felt sad to dispose such durable bags. From this feeling, OFUKURO-SAN was born.

“Fukuro” means “bag” in Japanese, and adding the polite prefix “o” and the honorific suffix “san” adds another meaning “mother” in Japanese.

When she made this bag, a friend said, “Your mother (ofukurosan) will be happy seeing this bag”. So she decided to name this bag “Ofukuro-san,” with the two meanings “mother” and “bag.”

The rice bag is made of three layers of paper. Although somewhat resistant to water, it is still paper. If it gets wet, wipe off the water with a towel, adjust the shape and dry it.
