Ishinomaki Kokeshi is a newer type of Kokeshi doll created in 2015 with the help of Yajiro Kokeshi artisans to revitalize Ishinomaki, a city severely impacted by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Reflecting Ishinomaki’s history as a fishing port, the doll’s body features a red fish pattern set against blue stripes.

■ History of Kokeshi Clip ■
Kokeshi Clips are produced in Japan by Sasaki Print located in the Tōhoku area.
The town Sendai got heavily damaged by the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 and also the Sasaki Print factory was destroyed completely.
The owner did not see any future for his factory but recognized how all the people gave their best to rebuild the area.
It was in a museum in Tokyo where he got the inspiration to create a special souvenir with drawings of Kokeshi (wooden dolls) which are famous for the northern part of Japan. He created different Kokeshi clips and started to sell them in beautiful small match boxes.

Today Sasaki Print is a small company, but one which gives big hope to the employees to recover from what happened.
By creating new products they want to contribute to the recovery of the Tōhoku region.
Hopefully there will be many people attracted by the beautiful products
and start to come back to visit the beautiful Tōhoku region.
