The Maneki Neko, or “Beckoning Cat,” is a lucky charm often displayed to wish for business success and an abundance of customers. The word “Maneki” means “beckoning,” and “Neko” means “cat,” reflecting its shape—a cat with a raised paw inviting good fortune. Typically, a cat with its right paw raised is said to attract money, while one with its left paw raised is believed to draw in people (customers).

■ Sasaki Print and Revitalization of Tōhoku ■

Sasaki Print, located in the Tōhoku area, was severely damaged by the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011, and the factory was completely destroyed. The owner initially saw no future for his factory but was inspired by the collective effort of the people to rebuild the area.

While visiting a museum in Tokyo, he found inspiration to create a special souvenir featuring Kokeshi (traditional wooden dolls) from northern Japan. He began producing various Kokeshi clips and packaging them in beautiful small matchboxes. These charming products quickly became popular souvenirs.

Thanks to the success of the Kokeshi clips, he has continued to create new items and contribute to the reconstruction of Tōhoku. It is hoped that these beautiful products will attract many visitors and encourage people to return to the Tōhoku region.
